I sat and saw This debate Between Jimmy Song and Jameson Lopp in Bitcoin’s ossification. I don’t even know where to start until the absurd and the “logic” broken in each argument that Jimmy made in this debate. So I will not try, I will focus on a specific argument line I did.
“Money should not change, it should be predictable.”
He spoke specifically in this regard with respect to “let things mature” in this space from a technical point of view, and implicitly indicating that the updates to Bitcoin “take out the carpet from existing developers who build things.
Jimmy doesn’t understand how Bitcoin updates work? We have been using softforks for more than a decade specifically to address the concern of backward compatibility. That is, to be able to say with 100% certainty that everything that has been built to date will continue to function exactly in the same way. All Bitcoin updates are opted, everything that existed before will work well and nothing should be changed to admit a new functionality if a developer or user does not want.
Zero there is a technical basis for Jimmy’s statements or arguments in this regard. The new functionality that allows the construction of new protocols or tools does nothing to inhibit the continuous functioning of pre -existing systems.
So what are you saying? For me, it essentially sounds like an argument for economic protectionism. There is zero threat, risk or problem created for pre -existing systems after an update, except for the possibility that higher systems can be built after an update and users would choose to use them instead. That is the only coherent argument that must be extracted from those statements.
So are we seriously at the point where “pro-asitists” are defending protectionist decision making for existing investments in current layers and systems?
