El Salvador is still a Bitcoin country

Follow Frank unknown.

El Salvador is still a country of Bitcoin, although Bitcoin is no longer legal in the country, at least from where I am sitting.

Let’s start with some background on the matter.

On January 29, 2025, the Legislative Assembly in El Salvador voted Eliminate Bitcoin state as legal tender.

This means that companies in the country no longer have to accept Bitcoin (it is not that this rule has been strictly applied, while Bitcoin was classified as legal currency, as far as I know; however, they have told me that the big companies that They operate in the country (for example, McDonalds, Walmart) can stop accepting Bitcoin as payment now, which could have a detrimental effect on adoption).

This change occurred approximately one month after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) He reached an agreement with the authorities in El Salvador that stipulated the following:

  • El Salvador would receive a loan of $ 1.4 billion to support the “reform agenda” of the government
  • Bitcoin related risks are mitigated; Bitcoin’s acceptance in the private sector must be voluntary, while public sector participation in Bitcoin related activities would be “confined” (Bitcoin can no longer be used to resolve government debts or pay taxes)
  • Operations for the Bitcoin wallet created by the government, goat, would be “unwindling”

While the news that the Salvadoran government will reverse its Bitcoin policy as legal as a result of the influence of the IMF feels like an intestine even for me, someone who is not Salvadoran and does not live in the country, I can ‘at help, but He believes that El Salvador is still a country of Bitcoin.

And this feeling has only been strengthened based on what I have seen Bitcoiners in El Salvador publishing in X.

Evelyn Lemus, co -founder and Director of Education at Bitcoin BerlinA Bitcoin circular economy within the country does not plan to stop teaching everyday Salvadorans about Bitcoin.

The team in BIT driver Do not plan to change your business model, accept bitcoin as a taxi rate, in the short term.

While John Dennehy, founder of my first Bitcoin, expressed concern for the Government of El Salvador, his Bitcoin policy as legal currency, he and the increasing team of the Bitcoin plan of my first to double the work they are doing.

The legendary Max and Stacy I have not publicly expressed any plan to renounce El Salvador in the short term.

And the Bitcoin office of El Salvador, directed by Stacy, is still stacking Bitcoin and helps manage Bitcoin education programs in the country.

The lesson here is that, although the law around Bitcoin may have changed in El Salvador, the bitcoiners in the field in the country have barely shuddered.

Because we are Bitcoin, what matters most is that everyday saviors and all others involved in the Bitcoin movement in El Salvador continue to move forward with Bitcoin’s mission.

The IMF may have hit, but the bitcoiners in El Salvador remain firm in their efforts to promote the broader adoption of Bitcoin.

El Salvador is still the country of Bitcoin.
